A primeval island in Australia will carry out a controversial anti-rodent program, causing serious divisions among local communities. Tourists are warned not to eat fish on the island, and milk from local cows will be poured into sewers.

According to the Daily Mail, last Thursday, court ruled that tons of rat poison would be dropped on the island`s (Lord Howe Island) in an effort to kill more than three hundred and sixty thousand rats on the island.

The island is 600 kilometers from the coastline of the new state and is known for its spectacular natural beauty and seabirds breeding grounds. About 16,000 visitors visit the island of Howe Hoon every year.

The action plan for spraying rodent poison will be launched next month. Authorities advises tourists not to eat fish on the island later in order to avoid toxic substances passing through the food chain. Some cattle will be evacuated from the island and hikers will not be allowed to explore the forest.

Residents of the island were told to cover the roof with waterproof cloth to prevent rat poison from contaminating the water tank.

The Black Mouse invaded Hershone Island about 100 years ago and has been rampant in recent years. The extinction of at least 5 species of birds and 13 invertebrates on the island is associated with black rats.
