As state and federal ministers prepare to attend a summit on domestic violence, a report shows that half of Australian women feel unsafe walking alone at night.
The report, written by the Australian Community Association, uses a range of factors, including personal security, educational standards, suicide, confinement and the gap between rich and poor, to examine what countries Australia wants to live in.
"We want a generous and friendly Australia and we can proudly support the less fortunate," said the association's president, Tim Costello.
"in the final analysis, we are more than just a passer-by of economic strength."
The report, "Australia we want," found that while Australians see themselves as tolerant communities, the reality is dark for many.
It found that only half of women decided it was safe to walk alone at night, lower than in other similar countries.
The report comes as state and federal ministers prepare to attend a national domestic violence summit in Brisbane on Friday.
Last week's parliamentary hearings showed that most of the funds reserved had not been spent at all a year after Prime Minister Turnbull launched his women's security package.
Last September, goverment pledged to allocate 12 million dollars to pilot new technologies to keep women safe, such as wearing a GPS tracker for domestic violence recidivists.
The government last week confirmed that only a project worth 180,000 was announced.
"as usual, Turnbull goverment said it was beautiful, but did very little," said Terri Butler, a Labour spokesman for domestic violence prevention.
