A man in Byron Bay, new state, has been charged with assaulting a police officer who not only bites one officer`s lower body, but also tries to gouge the eyes of another officer while trying to grab a gun.

Police have received reports that a man in Byron Bay attacked someone with a metal stick. Police arrived at the scene of the incident, at the junction of Jonson and Lawson Street, where the man violently resisted arrest and turned against the police.

The new state police said the man tried to pull a gun from a police officer`s holster during the fighting.

He was also understood to have seized and bit one of the officers and was about to gouge the eyes of another officer.

One officer had a ruptured left eye, swollen right hand, back pain and minor bruising.

Another officer`s groin was swollen and bruised.

Security personnel from nearby sites rushed in to help police subdue the man. He was then taken to Byron Bay police station and faced charges of involvement in fighting, resisting arrest, assaulting and intimidating police officers.

He was denied bail at the Lismore District Court on Saturday.
