Cario (Mark Caleo), who bought to kill his Asian wife, was sentenced to 12 years in prison before applying for parole at least nine years, compared with 20 years for employed killer.
Cario, 55, was a well-known restaurant owner in Sydney, the Daily Telegraph reported. His Malaysian-Chinese wife, Rita (Rita Caleo), was stabbed to death at the age of 39 in her bedroom in (Double Bay), Shuangwan, in August 1990, when her two daughters slept in a wall-by-wall room. Rita`s death was one of the most famous pending cases in the new state.
Cario was convicted in April of buying murder Rita, while a 51-year-old Tomka man, Afu (Alani Afu), was convicted of murder Rita.
The New State High Court sentenced Cario to 12 years in prison Thursday afternoon without parole for nine years and Alf to 20 years without parole for 15 years.
Cario is reported to have paid the former boxer A $10, 000 to kill his wife, Rita, and disguise the scene as a robbery and murder. Prosecutors say Cario`s motive was to remove Rita from her will because she suspected her husband was having an affair.
After investigating and obtaining new evidence, police arrested Cario and Afu in 2015.
Rita was born into a wealthy Malaysian family, and her brother, Mike (Michael Chye) Year Nineteen Eighty-nine, was shot in the head when she drove into the garage at (Woollahra) `s house in October. Although Rita had suspected that her brother`s death was related to Cario, the jury acquitted Cario of buying to kill Michael Tsai.
Court also heard earlier that Cario abandoned their two daughters after Rita`s death, leading them to travel nine places over a five-year period, including orphanages and foster homes.
"what my father committed was not just a terrible crime 30 years ago," the youngest daughter later said in a victim`s impact statement. "it had a lifelong impact on countless people." She said she was puzzled why her mother`s family in Malaysia had never contacted the two sisters, but it was only after contacting them that they also "lived in fear of their father."
