A couple of old couples in the northern part of the state were admitted to the hospital for the "terrible and abnormal" lizard attack, and their dog was bit killed on the spot.
At 03:30 yesterday, while the couple were walking in Flametree, near Airlie Beach, a giant lizard and their dog fought. The reptile "suddenly attacked them" as the two old men tried to stop it.
The 72-year-old man and his wife were brutally bitten as they tried to rescue the attacked dog. Then the lizard bit the man`s right arm and leg, as well as the old woman`s leg.
The man was taken to Mackay Base Hospital at 04:30, seriously injured in his arm and leg. He had surgery last night, while his wife was treated at Proserpine Hospital.
Their dog was bit killed in the attack.
Speaker, a CQ Rescue rescue helicopter, said the man was badly injured, could have broken his right forearm and injured bleeding in the leg.
"he`s in great pain," she said.
She described it as "a terrible, abnormal encounter."
Tucker (Shane Tucker), senior head of operations at the Kunzhou Ambulance Service Center, says the lizard`s claws can do harm to the body.
"I think because of the nature of the animal, it could cause some serious or even life-threatening harm," Tucker said. "it`s absolutely unusual. But it looks like he`s lucky he`s hurt and he`s still stable."
Whitsunday¡¯s Council said she was``broken`` about the shocking news.
"it`s really sad. My heart is broken," Clifford (Jan Clifford) said. "it`s a tragedy that I feel sorry for the two victims and their dogs."
Clifford could not confirm whether the two were locals or tourists.
She added that residents need to know that wild animals are unpredictable when they go crazy.
