New state 20, 000 medical staff plan strike, public hospitals fear chaos

On Tuesday, more than 500 representatives of (NSW Health Services Union), a new state health services union, voted unanimously to strike for four hours on Aug. 1 to try to improve the safety of hospitals in the state, the Australian news agency reported.

Hayes (Gerard Hayes), secretary of the New State Health Services Union, warned that the August strike was only the beginning of a union operation that would continue until the state government began to deal with and resolve the hospital security "crisis."

Hayes also referred to journalia`s mention of the stab, root, spitting and beating of a number of medical personnel.

The union asked government to send at least 250 additional security personnel to public hospitals. Hayes said appropriate security personnel would allow hospitals to intervene in advance in connection with security accidents, rather than waiting for problems to occur.

Hospital staff participating in the strike will include security personnel, paramedics, administrators and medical staff. But Hayes said health care workers would continue to deal with emergencies during the strike, but would not continue to deal with "trivial routine matters."

He said the operation of the hospital would be hit hard as a result. He stressed that unions have always put patients first, but hope that the new state government will pay attention to the safety of medical workers in the workplace.

Auxley (Tess Oxley), a member of the Health Services Union, also told the journalist that a recent emergency room in a hospital had to transfer patients back to ambulances for treatment because of a security crisis. She said many patients and their families were concerned about safety in the hospital.

The new state Labour Health Service, Mr. Ryan Park, has called for more human resources for public hospitals and training of medical staff so that they can better deal with the emergency and drug-affected patients.

He said on Tuesday: "The hospital staff are not air cylinders. The safety of medical workers, patients and the public is critical, and the liberals and the national party are indifferent to that."
