A bus caught fire on a Moorbooka south of Brisbane, killing one man and injuring as many as 11 passengers.

Emergency services arrived at the site of the Beaudesert Road incident at about 9 a.m. on Friday.

Queensland ambulance service says it treated up to 11 people at the scene.

Some of them are less injured, others need to be taken to hospital for treatment.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services managed to control the fire on the bus at about 09:19 and put out the fire in about a minute.

Firefighters then searched the burning vehicle and were treated by paramedics.

It is believed that the deceased was the driver of the bus. Update report: 12:33pm

A passenger lit a 29-year-old Brisbane bus driver after splashing it with a flammable liquid and killed him.

It was understood that the car was carrying six passengers and then stopped at the station outside Moorvale Shopping Center in Beaudesert Road to allow the three passengers who were waiting there to board.

The police temporarily ruled out the possibility of a terrorist attack.

"at the time of the incident, a passenger stepped onto the bus, splashed a flammable liquid on the driver, ignited the fire and killed the driver," Sheriff Jim Keogh said.

"the fire is so great that the driver is almost certain to die."

"as far as the current clues are concerned, everything is happening very quickly. Other details remain to be investigated. "

Passing taxi driver Aquek Nyok said he heard the screams of passengers trapped inside the bus and kicked them out of the car by kicking open the door.

A 48-year-old man has been arrested and is helping police investigate.

At the present stage, the person`s motivation is unknown.

After the incident, the area was declared a state of emergency, nearby businesses were also asked to evacuate.

Police are waiting for the arrival of the bomb squad and further inspection of the bus.

Brisbane decided to fly a flag at half-mast this Saturday in memory of the bus driver who was killed.
