At the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in Port Moresby, the United States announced it would help Australia rebuild its naval base on Manus Island.

The United States and Australia have been taking action to counter China`s growing influence in the Pacific.

At present, only about 13% of Papua New Guinea`s residents have a reliable electricity supply.

"electricity supply is the key to Papua New Guinea`s economic growth," the two leaders said.

"electricity has raised living standards in cities, towns and remote village communities. It allows schools and hospitals to provide basic services to residents. "

"this is also an important guide to the growth of the private sector and industry, including small and medium-sized enterprises".

Australia will contribute up to $25 million in the first year of the electrification project.
