According to a recent poll, nearly three-quarters of Australians believe that job search allowance should be raised to cover the basic cost of living.

According to a poll commissioned by the Australian Social Services Commission (ACOSS), most respondents expressed concern about tax cuts in the federal budget, Radio 7 reported.

Essential Research, a research firm, conducted the poll and interviewed about 1000 people earlier this month. The survey found that 72 percent of respondents thought the Newstart job search allowance should be increased to cover basic living expenses and help find jobs.

Goldie (Cassandra Goldie), chief executive of Australia's Social Services Commission, said on the 21st: "the new federal government urgently needs to raise its job-seeking allowance by at least A $75 a week."

Business groups, trade unions, leading economists and local government have all previously expressed support for an increase in the basic Newstart A $40-a-day standard for job-seeking allowances.

In terms of tax cuts, Unionparty government plans to cut $200 a week for residents earning A $ two hundred thousand a year, compared with 2 per cent of respondents who said it was unfair.

Sixty-seven percent of respondents said spending on public services, such as health care, education and live a retired life, would make a better life for the middle-income earners, compared with a $20-a-week tax cut.
