Nearly 60% of Australians hold passports and love to travel to New Zealand

Nearly 60 percent of Australians hold passports, and 20-somethings are the most likely. Australia's favourite destination for overseas travel, meanwhile, is New Zealand, with China in sixth place.

(Australian Passport Office) 's 2018 Passport Facts (2018 Passport Facts) figures show that the Office issued more than 2 million passports last year, up 38 percent from 10 years ago. This also means that every working day, the Australian Passport Office approves a passport application every three seconds.

14.48 million of the 24 million Australians hold Australian passports, or 57% of the Australian population. Young people in their twenties are most likely to hold passports and can take an international trip on a walk-by-go.

As for where the Australians will go with their passports, 40 percent of Australians travel abroad in a year, 74 percent of them go on vacation and 18 percent visit relatives and friends, according to the official Australian government website. 4% do business, 3% go abroad to study.

Australia's Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 's latest annual list of short-term stay countries released on April 10 showed that Australia's main tourist destinations for the decade ending August 2018 were concentrated in the Asia-Pacific region. Among them, New Zealand is still Australia's favorite destination. Indonesia, India, China, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia also ranked in the top 10. China's mainland has been ranked sixth for many years. In addition, Australia's traditional ally, the United States, and the United Kingdom are also countries where Australians like to visit.

Top 10 favorite destinations for Australian overseas travel

Compared with the 1990s, Australians travel to Japan is growing rapidly. Figures show that in 1997, about 41000 of the more than 100000 Australians to Japan were tourists. By 2016, the number of visitors had soared to nearly 400000, up 959% in 20 years. This is mainly due to Japan's low inflation rate over the past 20 years, which has benefited Australian tourists.

It is inevitable that there will be some unexpected troubles when traveling abroad.

In its 2017 / 2018 Annual report, the Commonwealth Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade noted that as the number of Australian citizen overseas countries increased by 5 percent in a year, the number of people seeking consular services also increased. On average, one in a thousand people will seek assistance from Australian embassies and consulates abroad. In FY17 / 2018, Australian agencies abroad provided a total of more than 210000 consular services and resolved 11880 cases.

These consular services include, of course, stolen or lost passports. Figures show that more than 41000 Australian passports have been stolen or lost. So in which countries are Australians most likely to lose or steal passports?

Australia is the worst country to lose or steal passports. Italy is not one of Australia's top 10 favorite travel countries, but many Australians have lost or stolen passports there. The loss of passports in China is also serious.
