Last year, overseas tourists spent 42.3 billion of their money in Australia, while Chinese tourists contributed 1/4.

Turnbull government aims to spend more money on Chinese and American tourists in remote areas of Australia, with new figures showing that overseas tourists injected A $42.3 billion into the Australian economy last year.

Federal Trade, Tourism and Investment Secretary Steve Ciobo says government wants to attract tourists who are willing to spend money.

"We are targeting high-spending tourists, willing to spend money on hotels and shopping and, more importantly, those who are willing to spend in remote areas," he said.

Data show that tensions in political relations have not affected Chinese demand for Australia, with Chinese tourists spending up 13 percent to a record A $10.9 billion.

Chinese tourists have accounted for 52% of all foreign spending growth.
