Figures show Melbourne's population will continue to soa

The latest projections from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that over the next 50 years, Melbourne will absorb most of the new residents in the state, making it difficult for the population in remote areas to grow.

Within a decade, Melbourne's population is likely to grow from 5 million today to 6 million.

Melbourne's population is likely to grow from 5 million today to 6 million within a decade, according to the Times. According to the latest official projections, Australia's population could reach 30 million by the end of the next decade, rising to 42 million by 2066.

Melbourne is expected to overtake Sydney, as Australia's largest city in 20 years, with a population of up to 12 million by 2066.

Melbourne's trend as the largest city in Victoria will continue, as will slow population growth in remote areas.

The state's new population in recent years has been dominated by emigrants, with a net increase of 90,000 in the year to June 2017.

In addition, immigration from other states has reached an all-time high, with more than 18,000 emigrating from other parts of Australia to Melbourne.

Prime Minister Morrison recently signalled a cut in immigration quotas, but ruled out a plan advocated by some lawmakers to force new immigrants to settle in remote areas.
