What kind of animal is the deadliest? It's not a shark or a snake!

According to the Daily Mail, Australia is home to some of the world's most dangerous animals. However, Australia's deadliest animal species is a little surprising.

In Australia, there are more deaths from horses and cattle than sharks and crocodiles combined, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, (ABS).

Between 2008 and 2017, 77 people died in horse, cattle and animal transport accidents across Australia. The death toll from sharks and other marine life was 26; crocodiles 17; bumblebees, hornets and bees 27.

The world's deadliest animals are mosquitoes, which kill more than 700,000 people a year. Snakes are second, killing about one hundred and ten thousand people a year, a fraction of which occur in Australia.

Although Australia is home to the world's most poisonous snake, snakes and lizards rank fifth in Australia's deadliest animal rankings.

There are also shocking figures showing sharks on some of Australia's hot beaches.

Earlier this month, a great white shark appeared in the waters about 150m from Sydney's popular Marubura (Maroubra) beach.

Recently, a 2-meter-long shark appeared at Middleton Beach (Middleton Beach) in Albany, WA.

This year alone, there have been 26 shark attacks in Australia, killing one person. Eight have been injured and only seven swimmers have escaped.

Number of deaths due to all types of animals between 2008 and 2017:

1. Transport of horses, cattle and animals: 77

2. Mammals / others: 60

3. Bumblebees, hornets and bees: 27

4. Sharks / other marine organisms: 26

5. Snake / lizard: 23

6. Dogs: 22

7. Crocodile: 17

8. Sting of non-toxic insects: 8

9. Contact with unknown, toxic arthropods: 4
