VRBO, a US holiday rental website, recently surveyed 1067 American respondents about dream travel destinations. The results show that Australia is the first dream destination for American tourists, even surpassing Hawaii and Italy. However, the United States is only the third largest tourist market in Australia.
According to the VRBO survey, 13 percent of respondents believe Australia is their dream destination, the 16 th reported. By age group, 5 percent of millennials in the United States chose Australia, 15 percent of Generation X and 19 percent of baby boomers. However, VRBO found that Australia ranked only 18th among the most visited destinations in the United States. In addition, the Australian Tourism Board (TA) data also show that the United States is Australia's third-largest tourist market in 2018, and is the second largest tourist market in total consumption. Sydney is the most visited Australian city in the United States, according to the Australian Tourism Board.
In response, VRBO said, "the difference between dreams and reality shows that barriers to time and money are decisive factors in whether Americans will spend a dream vacation."
