Data show that South Australia's population growth depends on emigration.

According to the new data, the population of Adelaide would have been flat in the last fiscal year without the arrival of overseas immigrants.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Adelaide is the capital city with the least population growth in the country, except Darwin.

The city's population grew just 0.7% in fiscal 2016-17, the slowest increase since 2003-04.

Adelaide's total population increased by 9600, all emigrants.

The number of residents moving out of the city is almost the same as that of natural population growth (births minus deaths).

Governor Steven Marshall says the data show that urgent action must be taken to address the situation.

"this population growth data is totally unacceptable and more must be done to stop young South Australians from going to other states and overseas for job opportunities." He said。

The governor has long criticised South Australia for its slow population growth, and he raised the issue during his campaign.

"one of the priorities of my government is to address the low population growth in Adelaide and the region." "to increase the population, we need to create more work in South Australia," he said.

Adelaide's fastest-growing population was in the northern suburb of Munno Para West-Angle Vale, where it added 760 people, or 6.2 percent.

Of these, 70% were moved from other parts of South Australia, and 28% were natural growth.

Adelaide's inner city is the second-fastest growing region in the state, growing 3.2% in fiscal year 2016 / 17, largely by emigration.

Yankalilla on the Fleurieu Peninsula is the fastest growing region outside Adelaide. The area added 123 people, or 2.1%.
