Driving and playing with mobile phones will be photographed, and high-tech cameras will be piloted on some roads in Victoria.

The (VicRoads), Department of Justice of the Victoria Highway Service and the police have jointly launched a world-class pioneering technology to test a red-light-like camera for illegal driving, such as drivers' mobile phones, as evidence of punishment.

The camera captured images of more than 270 drivers driving in five hours of testing on an eastern high-speed (Eastern Freeway) driveway, the Herald Sun reported on June 6. Tests at the eastern highway found 7.1 percent of out-of-town drivers were found to be driving illegally, with more than 2, 000, 000 of them using mobile phones. According to tests conducted on the city ring (CityLink), 4.7 percent of out-of-town drivers had illegal driving practices, half of them using mobile phones. While some Victorians think the technology is great, others see it as just another "means of enrichment" developed by the state goverment and oppose the formal introduction of such technology. However, according to official sources, Victoria goverment has no plans to formally deploy the high-tech camera.
