One year after same-sex marriage, 5400 same-sex couples are married in Australia, and some have waited 17 years

Remember, December 7, 2017, the day in Australian history-same-sex couples can be legally married in Australia!

Today, almost a year later, more than 5400 same-sex couples, or 5.5 percent of all marriages, have married, according to < ABC News >.

One of the couples, Ban-Foo from Brunei and Selwyn from Singapore, married Ban-Foo, 50, with his partner at the Sydney Opera House earlier this month.

After 15 years in Australia, now they can hold hands in public without fear.

Remember that in 2001, they could only hold a very crude wedding in secret at a friend's house in a suburb of Singapore. At that time, they did not receive everyone's blessing, only the closest friends to witness the most important moment in their lives.

"17 years later, today, we finally have this moment," Selwyn said.

Similarly, Anne and Iris from Adelaide finally waited for the day.

Although Iris was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year, they finally had a small wedding in July, when family and friends from all over the country came to celebrate the wedding.

"I'm glad we're married, even though Iris is not doing well," Anne said.

On Nov. 15, the results of the referendum were officially announced: 61.6% of voters voted for Yes. Most people support same-sex marriage.

Today, a year later, we finally see more than 5000 couples, all waiting for this moment, waiting too long.

Perhaps this is Australia, an equal, inclusive, we love the place.
