Compliance with South Australia Super Bicycle Road regulations is worrying

The new road regulations introduced by South Australia a year ago require motor vehicles not to be less than 1 to 1.5 meters apart when surpassing bicycles. However, the investigation found that many drivers failed to comply with the regulations, endangering the safety of cyclists. Recent South Australian police data show that 12 drivers have been fined A $347 since the new road regulations were introduced and 18 have been warned of not being wide enough to overtake, according to the advertising newspaper (The Advertiser). According to a survey by the South Australia Bicycle Association (Bike SA), motorists regularly violate new road regulations on suburban roads with a speed limit of 60 kilometers an hour. Even more worrisome, 55 percent of motorcyclists said drivers had breached the 1.5-meter overtaking width on roads with speed limits greater than 60 kilometers an hour. Hagrid (Christian Haag), the association's director, expressed concern about the findings. He believes that such violations should be rectified through education and law enforcement. Munton (Charles Mountain), RAA's road safety manager, said he was surprised by the findings and wanted to know where violations were more frequent. The survey also found that 25 per cent of respondents said they had cycled more since the introduction, and 68 per cent said they had the basis to ride on the sidewalk according to the new rules. Forty-one percent said they rode more because they were allowed to ride on the sidewalk, where safety was more secure.
