The map of the homeless in Australia was released, unexpectedly, the number was so astonishing.

More than 100000 Australians are homeless and live in virtually every part of the country, according to census data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2016.

Homeless Council (CHP) says the map shows homelessness as a "national epidemic."

The number of homeless people in the country is 50 per 10,000, and there are large numbers of homeless people in densely populated urban centres and sub-developed areas.

To understand why, we should look at how the Bureau of Statistics defines homelessness.

In addition to street sleepers, homeless people include people living in shelters, boarding houses, makeshift homes or crowded houses.

Leeds Allen (Liz Allen), a demographer at the National University of Australia, says homelessness is not about having no roof, but that there is no safe and reliable home.

"the housing problem goes beyond the traditional street-sleeping concept," she said.

"the neighbors of middle-class families may be experiencing homelessness, and a lot of people will be surprised when they know."

One of the biggest categories is those who live in overcrowded homes, accounting for almost half of the homeless population statistics, and 2/3 of these people are born overseas.

Overcrowded housing, by definition, is a house that requires more than four extra bedrooms to accommodate permanent residents, the biggest reason for a nearly 5 percent increase in homelessness nationwide since the last census, according to the Bureau of Statistics.

Indigenous people account for 20% of the homeless, nearly 3/4 of whom live in extremely crowded housing.

Allen said the map highlights how many aborigines live in unsafe homes in remote areas.

"Aboriginals in Australia have very poor housing conditions, are uninhabitable and unsafe, which will undoubtedly have an impact on the health and social and community participation of the population," she said.
