Australian city families spend an average of nearly A $400 a week on cars, according to the Daily Mail.

Transportation costs for Australian households rose 3.5 percent in 2018, nearly double the 1.8 percent inflation rate, including petrol, registration fees and road charges, according to figures released by the Australian Automobile Association (Australian Automobile Association). Last year, Australian household car spending accounted for 14.4% of income.

City drivers spend an average of $350 a week. The annual cost of a car of A $18227 is enough to buy a new small hatchback, such as Suzuki or Mazda 2.

Sydney families pay 17.5 percent more for cars than in other metropolitan areas of Australia, costing A $425 a week and A $22108 a year, the most expensive city in Australia. The city has some of the most expensive roads in the world.

Melbourne families pay A $20115 a year, equivalent to A $387 a week.

Brisbane drivers pay A $19845 a year, or A $381 a week.

Perth families pay A $17831 a year, or A $343 a week, to drive.

Adelaide families pay A $16283 a year and A $313 a week.

The price of unleaded gasoline in Hobart was once the highest in Australia at 161.8 cents a litre, but its residents spent the lowest on cars, at A $303 a week, equivalent to A $15747 a year.

In 2018, households in remote areas paid A $14660, equivalent to A $282 a week, to transport, accounting for 12.7 percent of their household income. Last year, the cost of using cars in rural areas rose 4.7%.

Carse (Michael Case), director of vehicle engineering at the Royal Queensland Motor Club (Royal Automotive Club of Queensland), said car insurance, registration, services, maintenance and tires were the main costs of using cars.
