According to the Daily Mail, a Melbourne restaurant is laying fresh turf on the table, a move that has sparked debate on social media.

A Melbourne-based branch of the Grill'd restaurant is known to have laid turf on the dining table of the restaurant, on which customers' food and drinks are to be placed.

The restaurant even asked local diners if they would like to "mow" the restaurant, saying they could get a hamburger for free.

Many social media users don't understand the restaurant's gimmick approach, and many question the hygiene of eating on turf.

Some netizens say they just want to eat at the table, and restaurants don't have to. Others raised the question of how to place a drink on such an uneven surface.

Other netizens joked that pets might use such tables as toilets.

According to Grill'd 's website, the company, which is influenced by environmental awareness, has always wanted to do better.

Netizens retorted: "this is through weeding to promote environmental awareness."
