Gas leak resolved, Sydney CBD reopened

Roads near Martin Square in Sydney have been reopened after a high-pressure natural gas pipeline was damaged by excavators, resulting in a blockade of some of the CBD area.

On Friday night, a section of the gas pipeline broke down during the Sydney subway's (Sydney Metro) construction, and authorities immediately set up a 200-meter quarantined area.

Roads and railways, including Martin Square Railway Station, were closed and repaired overnight by 20 experts, who were finally restored Sunday morning.

A spokesman for gas company Jemera issued a statement apologizing for the gas leak.

"We would also like to apologize to the communities affected by this incident for your patience and understanding as we carry out repairs," the spokesman said.

Castlereagh St,Elizabeth St and Philip St between, Hunter St and King St have been blocked since the emergency around 10:30 on Friday night.

The new state transportation director, Constance (Andrew Constance), said the "very serious" accident occurred during the initial construction phase of the Sydney subway site.

He said he would not "delve into" which company should be held responsible, and that the new state security agency, (SafeWork NSW), is investigating.
