Why do New Zealand supermarkets produce five times as many avocados in New Zealand as they do in Australia?

Avocado prices in New Zealand supermarkets are nearly five times the price of Australian supermarkets in recent days, angering local avocado enthusiasts, the Daily Mail reported.

Photos on social platforms on Monday showed local avocados sold at New Zealand supermarkets for $6.99 each, while at IGA in Perth, Australia, avocados from New Zealand also sold for just A $1.50.

The New Zealand supermarket label also says that the avocado it sells is a local product, sold at the same-day market price. However, Perth IGA's label also says it's from New Zealand, but it's cheaper, at A $3.99 each, and it's still on sale.

Netizens in New Zealand are outraged and say the difference is too unfair.

One netizen wrote, "every seven bucks?" Is anyone really buying it? Our exports are so unfair! They (Australian customers) get products of better quality and lower prices, but we can only buy them at a high price. "

Another netizen said that this is too unfair, New Zealand has become an expensive place to live.

But a New Zealand avocado grower is sceptical of Perth's IGA products, arguing that the avocados should come from Australia, not New Zealand.

The grower said New Zealand avocados were cut from trees, not picked. Picking is Australian style. Avocados sold at Perth IGA look like they come from Australia or elsewhere, not New Zealand. He added that he was supplying avocados to New Zealand and export markets, and that Perth IGA's products did not meet New Zealand export standards.
