Saint Maurice was named after a statue of St. Morris, built in 1848, to commemorate the earliest Christian missionaries and missionaries on pine island, surrounded by wooden totem pillars. Carved with portraits of beasts and birds, totem pillars are weathered pale in contrast to rainforests and dark blue skies. These totem pillars, from various tribes on the island, symbolize the protection of the place by the gods of their ancestors, which are also a symbol of the fusion of Christian and local Kanak traditions.
Below Saint Maurice, there is a monument that records the names of 16 soldiers who left pine island to join World War I and died for France.
