Introduction

Tennant Creek is a small town in the middle of the Northern Territory, about 990km north from Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory, and 510km south from (Alice Springs), Alice Springs, the second largest city in the Northern Territory.

Tennant Creek is the only larger town between Alice Springs and Catherine (Katherine) on Stewart Highway (Stuart Hwy), which many travelers use as a relay station.

Tennant Creek is known for its indigenous culture, gold mines, and animal husbandry. The surrounding area, known as the Buckley Plateau (Barkly Tablelands), is a vast grassy plain with a vast blue sky and numerous cattle farms. The traditional aborigines of the environs of Tennant Creek are Warumungu. Their culture and stories are on display at one of Australia's best art and cultural centres, the Nyinkka Nyunyu exhibition.

Tennant Creek is also known as the "Golden Center in the Northern Territory," referring to the enthusiasm of local residents, where Australia's last massive gold rush took place in 1930.
