More than 40 asylum-seekers have been taken to Australia for treatment since the Medical Assistance Act became law in February, according to (MERG), the medical evacuation response group, SBS reported on the 24th. Although the medical evacuation response team said it received an average of 11.5 requests for emergency aid a day, Treasury Secretary Fredenberg (Josh Fredenberg) recently said repealing the bill was a top priority for re-election to the government.

In response, asylum-seeking groups say there have been 11 attempted suicides on Manus Island since federal elections last weekend. Asylum seeker Resource Center officials say the abolition of the bill is a matter of life and death and has a huge impact.
