Turnbull and his wife Lucy celebrate the 40th Sydney Gay Carnival (Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras) Grand parade. in Sydney
The Turnbull couple appeared on Oxford Street this evening as Dykes on Bikes and Boys on Bikes kicked off the big parade curtain.
Turnbull says this big parade is a wonderful part of Sydney.
Turnbull told reporters at the event: "it`s been 40 years. 40 years ago, Lucy and I dated for the first time, so our relationship is thanks to Mardi Gras."
The prime minister, who did not attend the event last year because of equality disputes over marriage, said today he was affirming love and respecting same-sex couples.
"it`s like our country is giving a big hug to same-sex couples," he said.
"this is one vote for equality, one vote for respect, this vote is too significant."
