New state governor Berelyn yesterday officially announced plans for the first phase of the upcoming light rail operation in Parramatta, with a total of 16 new light rail stations to be built in Sydney.

New state governor Berelyn yesterday officially announced plans for the first phase of the upcoming light rail operation in Parramatta, with a total of 16 new light rail stations to be built in Sydney.

The light rail plan is likely to take place in two phases, with a 12-kilometer route from Westmead to Parramatta CBD via Carlingford, which is expected to open in 2023.

This morning, Berelyn said the project also confirmed the state`s commitment to Parramatta City Hall.

"the project will not only connect the main parts of the entire Parramatta area, but will also make the communities in the area more dynamic." She said.

But she and Transport Secretary Andrew Constance both had to stress once again that they had abandoned the station at Olympic Park because of major traffic problems in the first phase.

"We need to put the station in the right place and design the right route," Mr. Constance said.

Ms. Berelyn says she understands that traffic near Olympic Park is a big problem.

At present, the government has confirmed that it will allocate A $1 billion to support the project. The change has been largely completed, but the rest is likely to be paid by the so-called premium and additional contribution to the treasury to cover the cost of the new route.

At present, 16 light rail stations are planned for construction.
