Morrison government is preparing for the Australian citizen status of deprive extremists, provided they have the right to acquire the nationality of other countries on the basis of their birthplace, parents or even grandparents.
The cabinet`s senior national security committee has reportedly discussed plans to expel terrorist, currently only Australia`s citizen.
Government also plans to announce a strong new law for dual-nationality terrorist living in Australia. The current legislation is not working because it requires extremists to be sentenced to six years or more for terrorism crimes before they can be deported.
The Daily Telegraph learned that the vast majority of the 400 terrorist monitored by the ASIO were dual nationals or had the right to citizen status in other countries on the basis of their or their parents or grandparents` place of birth.
So far, however, only six dual-nationality terrorism elements have been identified as Australian citizen by deprive. Others escaped because ASIO lacked the resources to monitor each and every one of them around the clock.
The plan to expel terrorist, who is only Australia`s citizen, is backed by some Liberal parliament councillor, but others fear it could make Australia`s citizen stateless.
Home minister Darden (Peter Dutton) confirmed the plan Thursday morning in a conversation with Hadley (Ray Hadley) of 2GB.
"you can take citizen status away from someone, as long as you don`t make them stateless, even if they were born here, but depending on the country, in some cases, other countries may simply not recognize dual nationality. In some cases, if they are deprive Australia`s citizen status, then their other nationality will acquire an automatic adult. " Darden told Hadley.
"We have been studying this area for a long time because we have cancelled the visas of criminals at a record rate so that we can drive them out of the country. We should cancel the citizen status of terrorist and those who want to hurt us, because we don`t want them to stay here. "
Wood (Jason Wood), chairman of the Joint standing Committee on Immigration, a member of the Intelligence and Security Committee, said that if extremists were born overseas but had become citizen in Australia, They should be deported on the basis of their eligibility to regain their citizen status as their country of birth.
"as far as I`m concerned, if you raise your hand and pledge to abide by Australia`s citizen rights and responsibilities, but then you want to talk about jihad all day long, that is breach of contract, you have to leave." Said Wood.
Australia should also establish a secure court to handle sensitive intelligence materials, he said. "one problem is that we cannot expel dual nationality citizen. Unless convicted of terrorism crimes." He said。
By contrast, more than 160 men were evicted from Australia and 20 dual nationals were revoked because of child sexual crime.
A spokesman for Morrison government said: "government has not ruled out any options and has explored a number of measures with high constitution risk."
Home affairs minister Peter Darden admitted in February in a speech to the news department that the current anti-terrorism law had not worked.
