Chinese telecoms giant Huawei has been banned from 5G network construction projects in Australia for security reasons.
The Australian federal government says there is too much risk for any company that "may be instructed by foreign governments to violate Australian laws" to participate in the 5G network, the Australian news agency reported.
Huawei has spoken publicly earlier, arguing that it would never hand over Australian customer data to Chinese intelligence agencies. However, the Federal Government of Australia announced today that no combination of technical security controls can effectively mitigate this risk.
"while we are currently being protected as much as possible by security controls, as the complexity of the new network increases, these protections are ineffective in the 5G network," the Australian federal government said in a statement.
In its response today, Huawei Australia continues to emphasize its qualifications, saying it has provided wireless technology to Australia safely and reliably for nearly 15 years.
