On social media, the labels "smashastrawb" (crushed strawberries) and "cutthemupdontcutthemout" (shredded rather than thrown away) were frequently mentioned as a sign of support for fruit farmers, who had been forced to throw away fruit.

On taste.com.au, searches rose 68 percent on Wednesday, up from even more the previous day. Searches for strawberry jam and muffins increased the most on the site, but have more than halved since the first exposure of the Tibetan needle incident.

Woolworths announced yesterday that all sewing needles were removed from the shelves.

A Woolworths on the central coast will punish its employees after a staff member jokingly told a customer: "they now have free sewing supplies in their strawberries."
