In recent years, Australia has cancelled tens of thousands of foreign student visas for reasons such as bad conduct and fraud.
Overseas students are major contributors to Australia`s emigration, with more than 374000 visas approved in 2016 / 17.
In 2010-11, the figure was 278,000.
In the four years from fiscal year 2013 to 14, visas for more than 55000 students were cancelled because of poor conduct, violations of job rules and alleged fraud, according to the Home Office.
These include 42025 offshore cancellations and 13416 onshore cancellations.
The number of visa cancellations is roughly related to the number of students in Australia in some years, the agency said.
"the increase in the number of overseas cancellations in 2014 / 15 (7850 points) and 2015 / 16 (16885) coincides with the new business model adopted by the department and the reduction in the time required to make the cancellation decision." He said。
As of Dec. 31, 2018, the number of cancellations in 2017-18 was 7519.
Dr. Bijur (Bob Birrell), an immigration expert at (Australian Population Research Institute), an Australian population research institute, said the size of the overseas student market was affecting entry-level employment prospects and housing competition for young Australians.
"this is the biggest factor driving overseas immigrants to Australia." He said。
In the past, immigration authorities have been under pressure to deal with violations by foreign students, Dr. Bijur said.
"but it is clear from these cancellations that if educational institutions do report violations to the authorities, they will still take action against students." He said。
Another important migration flow is those who come here as spouses or partners of Australians.
Over the years, of the one hundred and ninety thousand visas issued to permanent immigrants, the maximum number of spouse visas per year is 47825.
The number of spouse visa applications is also very large.
In 2014-15, Victoria absorbed 12316 foreign spouses, with China, India and Vietnam the largest countries of origin.
Figures for subsequent years have not yet been released.
Between 2013 / 14 and 2016 / 17, 1350 spouse visas were cancelled.
