Australian Defense Department personnel were asked to avoid the use of words such as "he" and "she" instead of gender-neutral words.

The Defense Academy recently issued a new LGBTI guide, which trains new recruits for the army, navy and air force.

This guide is directed at ADFA staff. It stresses the importance of respecting the members of the LGBTI and the Ministry of respect for behavior and language.

Employees are asked to consider "avoid stereotyping" and use as many correct pronouns and names as possible for members of gender diversity.

The guidelines also encourage the use of gender-neutral language when referring to "relationship and gender identity" and "mental health of members."

Employees are asked to apologize to their colleagues if they make a mistake.

"all ADFA staff need to know that the deliberate use of non-inclusive languages due to gender diversity, exclusion and bullying are actions that affect LGBTI members," the guidelines said.

The guidelines warn that "unacceptable behaviour" will not be tolerated and will be dealt with as soon as possible to maintain an inclusive learning environment.

Brigadier General Cheryl Pearce, commander of the ADFA, wrote that her purpose was to make the guidance a valuable resource for employees to make decisions by LGBTI members.

The publication of the guidelines last year raised concerns about political correctness.
