Today, as I am about to enter my first annual summit season as Prime Minister, I would like to share with you some of my views on the way in which Australia exchanges within the region and between Australia and other regions.
Our foreign policy defines what we think of the world and where we stand in it.
Our foreign policy must talk about our character and our values. What do we represent. What we believe, and what we defend if we need to. This is the guideline of our national interest.
I am concerned that for some time our foreign policy has been evaluated too much from a narrow trading perspective.
In the definition of foreign policy and the interests of our country, over-exaggerating the meaning of project transactions will put us at a disadvantage.
If we allow this trading mindset to persist and become a compromise in our beliefs, not only will we be disappointed, but we will no longer express our views.
