The Labour Party pushed for an increase in the number of refugees to 50,000.
As the left tries to soften the party`s position on boat people policy at this year`s national Congress, the Labour Party`s policy committee is considering plans to raise Australia`s acceptance of refugees to 50,000.
Labour party members, union officials and members of Congress, including the left-wing convener Andrew Giles, are seeking to be elected representatives of the National Congress under the banner of supporting refugees, promising to change the party`s policies to make it more "humane".
Fairfax media learned that a working group was investigating a proposal to raise Australia`s annual refugee intake to 50, 000-the same as the Green Party`s goal.
The proposal is said to be in the midst of a "worthy of further consideration" idea, although any final proposals for revision will require the support of the party`s leadership.
The pro-refugee labour group has called for a more left-leaning labour party, doubling the number of refugees it currently receives, bringing all refugees from Nauru and Manus to Australia, and launching a royal investigation into immigration detention centres.
The asylum-seekers Resource Centre is reported to have made similar recommendations.
The Turnbull government has raised the annual refugee intake to 18,999, while the Labour Party`s current position is to increase it to 27,000 by 2025.
The Greens want to raise to 50,000, including 10,000 skilled refugees.
