Police say a car hit pedestrians near the corner of Bourke St and Queen St in CBD, Melbourne. One man was arrested by the police.

Deputy director of the state police said three people were killed and at least 20 others were injured. The dead included a child.

He said the incident had something to do with the earlier stabbing incident in the south of the city.

The police have arrested the suspect and there is no further threat to the public at this time.

He also confirmed that the incident had nothing to do with the terrorist attack.

The Victoria Ambulance Association says emergency workers assessed 20 people after the incident and several were seriously injured.

The "At this preliminary stage, we believe that a man drove a car at Bourke and the corner of the Queen`s street to a few passers-by at 2:00 p.m."-state police spokesman said.

The Victoria Ambulance Association confirmed that several people were hit at about 01:30.

At least four people were treated at the corner of the streets of Bourke and Queen.

Armed police in bulletproof vests, along with police in uniform and plain clothes, patrol the area.

The Royal Children`s Hospital says it has treated four people, urging that if your child`s condition is not urgent, try not to send your child to the hospital.

A witness named Luara said she saw a car driving fast near Flinders Street Station.

"people want to stop the man who`s driving in circles. He`s half hanging out of the car." She said.

Another witness said he saw a car burning a tire and then riding on the sidewalk.

Christine Nixon, the former Victorian police chief, witnessed the incident first-hand.

She said one of the injured was a young child who appeared to have been thrown out of the cart.

"I was at the corner of Bourke and William ready to cross the road, and people began to scream." She told Melbourne radio station ABC.

"I looked back at the car. The car was only about a meter away, and I took a step back as he drove along the Bourke Street on the sidewalk, with people chasing after him. A few people fell to the ground, and many passers-by came to help. "
