The sudden announcement of several tough immigration policies last week helped Mr Tan`s approval ratings pick up, suggesting that Australian opinion was in favour of tightening immigration policy.

According to the latest Newspoll poll, Labour is still ahead of the Union by 52 percent to 48 percent, but Tan Bao`s approval rating rose 1 percent to 42 percent. Opposition leader Shawton`s approval rating is only 33%.

The ruling coalition`s 36% approval rating is down 6% from last year`s federal election and has yet to recover from the summer slump. Moreover, a large number of coalition voters left and invested in Han Shan`s one-ethnic party. Many speculated that the hard immigration policy announced last week was meant to reverse the party`s collapse in support. Even Han Shan pointed out that Tan Bao`s new deal was her first proposal.

In addition, the Green Party, a proponent of large numbers of immigrants and refugees, has fallen in popularity. The far-right party, at 10%, has surpassed the far-left Green Party for the fourth time in a row.

For a democracy like Australia, if it does not follow public opinion, it can only face the result of being abandoned by voters. Therefore, the tightening of immigration policy in Australia is not only the policy of goverment, but also the trend of mainstream public opinion in Australia.
