KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 24(Reuters)- Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir has submitted his resignation to the king, his office said on Monday.

Last weekend, the ruling alliance met unexpectedly with the opposition over the formation of a new government, which would exclude Anwar Ibrahim, Mahathir`s designated successor.
In a statement, Mahathir`s office said," This letter was sent to His Royal Highness at 1 p.m. "
It is not clear whether Mr Mahathir will again form a government with the support of other parties, but Muhyiddin Yassin, the interior minister, said on fb that Mr Mahathir`s party, Bersatu, has also quit as president of the ruling alliance. (end)
