On Saturday he further suggested how the Australian flag should be designed.

"I think we`ve found answers for them, like drawing a big kangaroo, like the maple leaf of the Canadian flag." Peters said.

Peters was an active opponent when New Zealand voted to change its flag in 2016, when confusion between the flags of Australia and New Zealand was often raised.

"We designed it, they borrowed the idea, and if we don`t want to confuse it, then they should change the flag." He told reporters in Wellington this week.

New Zealand adopted the South Cross flag in 1902, while Australia officially adopted the South Cross flag in 1954.

But the Australian flag won a competition in 1901 and flew on its first Flag Day in September of the same year. The Australian flag was slightly altered over the next 10 years.
