According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the new rules, now known as "temporary skilled workers shortage" visas, have reversed the decision after social media advertisements were not used as evidence to meet the priority of hiring locals.

In March, employers were required to prove that they had done two job advertisements covering Australia in the past 12 months. Advertising on social media Twitter,Facebook,Linked In,Instagram and Gumtree cannot be used as a credential.

At the end of 2017, 75610 overseas employees worked in Australia on 457 temporary worker visas. The new rules mean employers can post job advertisements on just two platforms, including Jobactive and LinkedIn, the government employment portal, and the time requirement for advertising has been reduced to six months.

The three-week LinkedIn ad costs about A $500, while Jobactive ads are free.

In response, Shayne Neumann, the Communist Party spokesman for immigration, said it was another "turnaround" by the government as proof that it "screwed up" Australia`s skilled immigration program.

If Labour wins the election, he says, it will launch a skills assessment body. The government announced major reforms to the 457 visa program last year, but made some adjustments after strong reactions from immigrants and businesses. These changes have led to a decline in visas, which fell to 25,000 in the past year ending in March, from 45,999 in fiscal year 2016 / 17.
