The 2017 Shanghai Jiaotong University World University rankings announced today that Australia`s six top universities continue to have a place in the top 100.

According to the Australian newspaper, Harvard University and Stanford University in the United States won the first or second place in the ranking, while Australia`s highest-ranking university also continued to be picked up by the University of Melbourne, which is ranked 39th this year. Up one place from last year.

In addition, the University of Queensland ranked second among Australian universities, ranked 55th, the same as last year. Next came Monash University (78 this year, 79 last year), Sydney University (83 this year, 82 last year), the University of Western Australia (91, 96) and the Australian National University (97 this year, 77 last year).

A spokesman for the Australian National University said the list "fluctuates every year because of changes in the ranking calculation methods and standards," a spokesman for the Australian National University said.

The overall performance of Australian universities is strong

Among the world`s top 100 universities, Australia still ranks third in the world, behind the United States (48) and the United Kingdom (9).

(Tony Sheil), deputy director of research policy at Griffith University, said: "when the ranking of Shanghai Jiaotong University World University was first published in 2003, only 13 Australian universities were on the list. Australia is one of the most successful countries in international higher education, with 23 in the latest rankings (six out of the top 100). "

Non-"eighth National Congress" Colleges and Universities strive to catch up with each othe

The strong performance of Australian research-based universities other than the "Big eight" may begin to narrow the gap between Australia`s research-oriented universities and the Big eight.

The brightest performers were the (Curtin University) and Macquarie universities, which rose to 151-200 this year after ranking 201-301 last year. This is Australia`s non-eight universities entered the top 200 for the first time.

"the change in rankings raises the question of whether we are experiencing a tapering gap between the Big eight and the second tier of colleges," Schell said.

Schell said it was "premature" to say so, but Britain is experiencing the same change. Some new members of the UK`s leading research university alliance, Russell Group (the Russell Group), such as Exeter University and Warwick University, have dwarfed some established members in terms of academic performance. The Russell group, founded in 1994, consists of 24 leading research universities in Britain, including the famous golden triangle, known as Britain`s Ivy League, representing Britain`s top universities

Terry (Deborah Terry), president of Curtin University, said the school was "very happy" with the rise in the rankings, proving their research strategy was correct.

Many of the indexes on the Shanghai Jiaotong University list were all up, but the most significant improvement was the number of scholars cited in the paper. Terry said the number of highly cited scholars at Curtin University rose from three to four, including two in geography, one in engineering and one in computer science.

Ranking measures cause concern

The statistics of the Shanghai Jiaotong University`s ranking of world universities for papers with high citation rates are that the database is constantly updated and the co-authors of the papers are considered to be full citations of the authors. Experts say the ranking of Shanghai Jiaotong University is one of the industry`s most authoritative rankings of world universities, and this statistical approach can cause instability in the ranking.

Smith (Bradley Smith), director of (James Cook University) research strategy and performance at James Cook University, said: "there are a lot of concerns about the use of `high-citation` metrics, including erroneous references to authors or multiple recalculations," said Smith (Bradley Smith), director of research strategy and performance at James Cook University.
