Tech giant Google (Google) said changes to the technology immigration visa system in 2017 forced Google to "revise its recruitment plan in Australia," according to Computerworld, a technology news website, and called on the federal government to "revise its skilled immigration policy."

In April 2017, government announced that it would remove the temporary visa category and replace it with the temporary technical shortage (Temporary Skill Shortage, (TSS) visa category. Depending on your occupation, TSS visas range from 2 to 4 years. The visa will be fully implemented in March of this year.

In June 2017, government updated the list of temporary and permanent technical visa occupations, with a large number of ICT jobs eligible for four years. The government said it plans to update the list every six months.

Government, which earlier launched public consultations on a digital economy strategy, closed last year and this week released a large number of submissions, including Google`s.

Google`s submission said: "in order to attract workers with the necessary knowledge and experience to train young Australian employees, a longer-term visa category is essential, but it excludes key business skills." These include "familiar with Google proprietary products and systems" product manager, user experience specialist, technical solutions and systems administrator.

Google said Australia`s business visa system "is not as competitive as the rest of the world in two major ways." First, this system does not recognize the value of proprietary knowledge, and places are randomly classified into the technical category of the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of occupations (ANZSCO); Second, the system "does not provide the necessary long-term stability to attract overseas personnel who have the skills necessary to develop and train a globally competitive Australian professional team".
