Eastlake, president of the Australian Cherry growers Association, says all production areas have recorded good harvests! Previously, Australia`s cherry production national record is 15000 tons. But Eastlake says production this year will be 20% higher, or 18000 tonnes!
"assuming we don`t have any adverse weather conditions, I have reason to believe that we will achieve this goal."
The increase in cherry production this year is also inextricably linked to the increase in planting areas. In recent years, growers have created new production areas, growing more fruit trees on Riverland and Sunraysia.
One of Riverland`s cherry growers, Mr. Cotsaris, planted 12000 more trees in his orchard to supplement the existing 17000. And two weeks ago, Cotsaris began harvesting early varieties of cherries in the orchard.
Cotsaris says the cherries in his orchard in Renmark are good in size and quality! "We had a very mild spring, and though it was very dry, the cherries were always good."
However, the specific harvest depends on the weather conditions in the coming weeks, Cotsaris said. "if you keep it dry, the cherries will grow well and hopefully they won`t be damaged by Rain Water."
Last year was a living example! Cherry growers thought last year`s yield would be high, but the fruit trees were badly damaged by hail and Rain Water. Once the damage, even a little, will affect the cherry export.
