Introduction

In the green space of Chinese Memorial's resort town of Robe, a resort town on the limestone coast of (Limestone Coast) in southeastern South Australia, it is a huge stone imbedded with commemorative text.

Between 1856 and 1858, more than 16500 Chinese landed near the site, walking 400km to Victoria's gold mine in search of gold. At that time, China was still a poor, violent country. Drought and opium addiction turned this culturally rich land into a starving ruin. When the news of Australia's gold rush came to China, Many families and villages are desperate to send men and boys from their homes abroad in the hope of lifting them out of poverty. This group of Chinese also became the first generation of Chinese immigrants to live in Australia. Chinese Memorial was built to commemorate this history. Chinese tourists may wish to visit them if they pass by.
