Lightning Ridge is a small inland town in northern New South Wales, close to the southern border of Queensland, about 730km by car from Sydney, the capital of New South Wales, and has a permanent population of about 5000 people.
Lightning Ridge's name dates from a farmer and his 600 sheep who were unfortunately struck by lightning around 1870. The town is the world's famous black opal (, Opal) 's mining center, now Lightning Ridge is a prosperous vacation town). There are lots of RV parks and campsites. Lightning Ridge is located in the interior of Australia, and it is very hot in summer, so many buildings are built underground, which is one of the characteristics of the small town.
