Holbrook is a small town in the south of New South Wales, on the Hume Highway (Hume Hwy), about 490km from Sydney, the capital of New South Wales. About 390km by car from the Victorian capital of Melbourne, Holbrook and its surrounding areas are known for their local produce of wool, wheat, alfalfa, fat cattle and mutton.
The first name of Holbrook was the Shili River (Ten Mile Creek), which was built by German immigrants in 1836 and settled here. People gradually called it "German (The Germans)", and by 1875 it was officially named the German town of (Germanton),. Until World War I, because Australia's allies and Germany's allies were hostile, and the name of the town was clearly inappropriate, it changed its name to Holbrook,. To commemorate Norman Douglas Holbrook (Lt. Norman Douglas Holbrook), who built a meritorious submarine captain during the first World War.
