Located east of (Clare Valley), an important wine region in South Australia, Burra is a historic town about 160km south from Adelaide, the capital of South Australia.
Burra was once a mining-based town with a single economy, where copper mines provided 89% of Australia's supply, attracted a large number of miners from all over the world in the mid-19th century, and were closed in 1877. And in 1970 it was mined again until 1981, when it was closed again.
With the decline of mining industry, the population of Burra declined sharply, and the main economic structure changed from mining to farming and pastoral areas and agricultural activities. Today's Burra is the center of the surrounding agricultural community, and as one of the best-preserved Victorian towns in Australia, it has become a tourist destination, attracting many visitors every year.
