A hearing on the Australian Defence Force's operations in Afghanistan revealed that young soldiers in Australia had brutally shot and killed prisoners, even women and children fleeing as legitimate targets.

The Australian Defence Force (Paul Brereton) has conducted a four-year investigation into the accusation, of Australian special forces accused of war crimes in Afghanistan.

After questioning more than 400 witnesses and reading tens of thousands of documents, Brighton judge found credible evidence that 39 Afghans had been unlawfully killed in 23 incidents.

A majority of these people died between 2009 and 2013, and their families could receive compensation from the Australian government without waiting for anyone to be prosecuted.

Brighton determined that 25 active or retired members of the Australian Defence Force committed one or more war crimes.

Some of the Afghans killed by the Australian Army were allegedly not involved in hostilities and most of the dead were prisoners of war.

As stated in the investigation report ," none of these (killing) are contested decisions taken under the pressure of fierce fighting "and" in cases where credible information on war crimes has been established, the victims are clearly non-combatants. "

Beyond the above-mentioned cases, there are dozens of accusation that the Australian Army has killed innocents without evidence.

Brighton believes there is credible evidence that some soldiers place weapons or military equipment on the scene to make the dead look like legitimate targets.

In addition, there is evidence that lower soldiers will be shot and killed by their patrol commander to complete their first killing experience.

An investigation at the hearing recommended that the Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Defence Force refer 36 cases to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) for follow-up and criminal investigation, involving 19 of the 23 incidents.

Brereton attributed the greatest responsibility to the patrol commanders, believing that they bore the greatest responsibility for inciting or directing subordinates to commit war crimes.

In his report, he states :" The preparation, commission, continuation and concealment of criminal acts are at the level of the patrol commander, where the vast majority of responsibility lies. "

He will also send a letter to the Governor of Australia requesting the withdrawal of collective awards received by the Special Action Task Force (SOTG) serving in Afghanistan between 2007 and 2013.

Second squadron special aircrew will also be disbanded, will have different names of new squadron to replace.

Individuals involved may be deprive medals or face disciplinary action.

The Australian defense officer minister Chester (Darren Chester) stressed that it is important that the actions of others do not discredit more than 39000 Australian troops deployed in Afghanistan.

"For the vast majority of people, their service is in line with the values we want as a nation and their high standards for each other ," Chester said. "
