Former Australian Prime Minister Tony Albert

The prime minister`s predecessor says if Turnbull falls behind Labour in 30 consecutive polls, he needs to explain why he should not step down.

One of the reasons Turnbull challenged Albert in 2015 was that Unionparty lagged behind in 30 consecutive polls.

The Australian newspaper`s latest poll shows that Labour continues to lead the Unionparty by 53-47 in bipartisan support, the 28th time that government has fallen behind Labour since Turnbull became leader.

"it was the prime minister who set the test, and I guess if he couldn`t pass it himself, then he needed to explain why the test was only selective for someone," Albert told 2GB Radio.

"he needs to tell us why this test doesn`t apply to him."

Turnbull was only 37-35 ahead of Schotton on the preferred prime minister, up from 14 points a month ago.
