The European Union plans to implement a new access system to reduce illegal immigration and combat terrorism and strengthen security, according to the traveller.com.au. This access system will also affect Australians travelling to Europe.

For Australians, the so-called new system, European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), adds another application model to the existing Schengen Convention.

It is reported that the system will be officially implemented in 2020. After the new system comes into effect, Australians planning to go to EU countries will need to apply for ETIAS visas online. During the application process, the applicant will be asked questions about safety and will be asked to provide detailed travel plans. This is also a process of counter-terrorism. And Australians have to pay a fee, probably 5 euros. However, only talented people need to apply for ETIAS visa, minors under 18 years of age only need a passport.

Unless you have a ETIAS visa, you will not be allowed to board a plane, ferry, cruise ship or train to Europe. ETIAS visa is valid for a period of three years from the date of issue and is automatically invalid if your passport expires.

As long as you get a ETIAS visa, you can move freely in the Schengen area. The rules are similar to the existing Schengen rule, which allows Australians to travel freely for 90 days.

But the ETIAS did not take into account the fact that Australia and many European countries have visa-free agreements, most of which were signed in the 1950s. The visa-free agreements allow Australian passport holders to stay in these countries for 90 days.
